According to our research, the space our gallery occupies had been a barbershop from when it was first built about 100 years ago. It is a unique space that was constructed in the front yard of a private home, which we assume was occupied by a barber and his family. Many of the homes in Hamtramck were built to house immigrant workers employed at the Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company at the beginning of the 20th Century, so we also assume that the original barber had many customers who were auto workers from the neighborhood.

Multiple barbers have occupied the space over the years—unfortunately the COVID 19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the business of the most recent barber, forcing him to close his doors in 2021.

Barbershops are community hubs where lively conversations and the exchange of ideas happen. They serve as a microcosm for local life, welcoming individuals from all walks of life to share stories and forge relationships. By maintaining the word "barbershop" in our name, The Barbershop Art and Book Gallery hopes to continue that tradition by building a space that provokes solidarity through alternative thought.

Nestled in the heart of Hamtramck (and by default, Detroit), we aspire to create a space that will be accessible to all individuals who take interest in artwork and photography books from compelling local, national, and international artists.

We serve as a platform which looks to build connection beyond the superficial, encouraging lasting relationships formed through mutual interests and esthetic experiences.
